20 Writing Prompts to Overcome Writer’s Block

As a writer, it’s not uncommon to experience writer's block. The dreaded inability to write can strike at any time, and it can be frustrating and demotivating. Whether you're a new or experienced author, there will be times when the words just won't come. So how can you overcome writer's block and keep writing?

First, give yourself grace. Just because you are a writer does not mean that words are meant to be streaming at all times. A jeweler isn’t always making jewelry, they also research, learn about gems, and admire the beauty of other pieces. Oftentimes, the best thing we can do as a writer is to step away from our writing and inspiration to come from the world around us. That’s why taking a walk or bubble bath can be such a gift allowing our brains to relax and its often in these moments when we aren’t hyper-focused that our next step becomes clear.

Second, if you still have a desire to write but aren’t sure what to write or what is the next step in your novel, taking time just to write for the sake of writing can also be powerful. This gets you into the practice of writing and allows you to let the story take on a life of its own without the pressure of it needing to be the next big scene in your novel.

To help you get into the practice of writing, here are 20 writing prompts to help you get started.

  1. Write a scene where a character receives a letter that changes their life forever.
